The East Side boasted an impressive array of institutions, including 16 churches, five educational facilities, and seven medical and dental practices. The black physicians included Dr. Eli S. Cobb, Dr. John W. Scott, Dr. Aaron Long, Dr. S.W. Boyd, Dr. A. S. McGee, Dr. J. Lee Pickens, and Dr. Albert A Dixon. As for the schools, there were Miss Asbury’s School, Spencer Bibbs Elementary, J. Lee Pickens Elementary, Brown Barge Elementary, and Miss Lillie’s Private School for Colored Children, although it’s important to note that these schools operated under the constraints of segregation.
